The AISI 316 stainless steel is also an austenitic steel that contains Chromium (18%), Nickel (8%), and Molybdenum (3%), defined by the initials 18/8/3.
The difference between AISI 304 and 316 is due to the presence of Molybdenum, and in some cases, a slightly higher concentration of Nickel.
AISI 316 steel is used in very aggressive environments, where there are many corrosive factors prolonged over time. These environments include marine areas, saline environments, areas affected by salt spread, areas in contact with chemicals.
AISI 304 steel is used in environments where there are corrosive factors but less significant than those indicated for AISI 316.
